Wind Tre selects Ericsson for long-term Core Network modernization partnership to drive 5G advancements

Wind Tre has reconfirmed its selection of Ericsson to complete the long-term, comprehensive, modernization of its core network, supporting all 4G, 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) and 5G Standalone (SA) subscribers under a seven-year agreement spanning 2026 to 2032. The new agreement expands the work began under the 2022 partnership to bring 5G Core, supporting 5G Standalone, to Wind Tre.

Wind Tre will deploy a full Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core solution, built on Ericsson Cloud Native Infrastructure (CNIS). The modernization will be designed to support Wind Tre traffic growth through 2032, while increasing network automation, enhancing operational efficiency, and contributing to a reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO).

The agreement includes the evolution of Wind Tre’s core network through Ericsson’s technologies and services, including Packet Core, User Data Management (UDM), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Signalling, Provisioning, Mediation, Network Location Services and network management. The agreement includes the swap of existing messaging platforms.

The project also integrates Ericsson’s security solutions and increases the level of automation introducing additional tools and supporting additional use cases aiming to simplify customer operation daily task to ensure secure, resilient, and reliable operations.

This collaboration supports Wind Tre’s strategy to further cloudify and automate its network. The modernization will consolidate the number of datacentre sites (from an existing 18 sites down to 12 sites) and leverage new generation hardware to lower energy consumption, as well as enable new 5G capabilities, in alignment with 3GPP R17, such as end-to-end network slicing and advanced services for enterprise customers.
