Telstra uses mmWave 5G to push its network download speeds
Telstra, in collaboration with Qualcomm, Technologies Inc. and Ericsson, has set a new network download speed record of 5.9Gbps using a smartphone form factor mobile test device, powered by the Snapdragon® X65 5G Modem-RF System and Qualcomm® FastConnect™ 6900 subsystem, an Ericsson Radio System and dual connectivity software connected to Telstra’s commercial mmWave 5G mobile network.
Telstra Network and Infrastructure Executive, Iskra Nikolova said that this achievement demonstrates how Telstra is constantly testing and evolving technologies to implement in their commercial network.
“This time last year we pushed our network to a new top speed of 5Gbps, now, twelve months on we have added almost another Gigabit per second on top of that”, she said.
The record was set as Telstra readies itself for its third mmWave compatible device, The NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 Pro, slated to hit the shelves in April.
The NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 Pro, which will launch exclusively with Telstra in Australia, is the latest generation of 5G Mobile Broadband device from NETGEAR. It features mmWave 5G, WiFi 6 and high-speed ethernet. It is capable of connecting 32 devices simultaneously and through 5G connectivity able to deliver speeds significantly faster than 4G equivalents.
Ms Nikolova said, “The rapid evolution of mmWave technology is really exciting for our industry. Speed tests and records are fun, but what this network technology can offer our customers when coupled with commercial devices such as the NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 Pro is where things really get interesting.”
“NETGEAR delivers groundbreaking tech like no other,” said David Henry, President & GM of Connected Home Products and Services at NETGEAR. “And with Telstra’s 5G network, Nighthawk M6 Pro will deliver unmatched performance for anyone who needs a reliable and secure connection to work and play from anywhere.”
“As we continue to work closely with Telstra and Ericsson in Australia in 2022, we are proud to have contributed to break a network speed record with Telstra again, this time reaching 5.9Gbps,” said Durga Malladi, senior vice president and general manager, 5G, Mobile Broadband and Infrastructure, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “As 5G mmWave grows globally, we look forward to bringing the multi-gigabit speed and low latency benefits of mmWave to more consumers and businesses.”
“Demand for cloud gaming, immersive media, and video streaming services are growing at a faster rate than ever before”, said Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson, Australia and New Zealand. “Not only will this new 5G record enable faster mobile broadband speeds and greater network capacity, it demonstrates Ericsson and Telstra’s commitment to push the boundaries of what is possible, ensuring customers can access the best mobile connectivity available.”

NOTES FOR EDITORS
- This accomplishment was achieved using Ericsson’s NR-DC software feature with downlink eight-component Carrier Aggregation (DL 8CC CA), in which eight contiguous carriers of 100MHz mmWave are combined with 100MHz of mid-band spectrum, resulting in higher data speeds on Telstra's mmWave 5G network. It follows the achievement last year, where Telstra, working closely with Qualcomm Technologies and Ericsson, reached a new network high with a 5Gbps 5G download speed using a smartphone form factor mobile test device powered by the Snapdragon X60 5G Modem-RF System on Telstra’s commercial network.
- The NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 Pro will launch exclusively with Telstra in Australia this April, available in store and online from $749 RRP.
- The NETGEAR Nighthawk M6 will also be available to purchase in April, exclusively from Telstra in store and Online $549 RRP.
