What is Ericsson Open Lab?

Collaborative innovation hub

Ericsson Open Lab serves as a collaborative innovation center aimed at speeding up the development and implementation of Open RAN and Cloud RAN technologies. Located in Ottawa, Canada, which is Ericsson’s largest R&D facility in North America, the lab facilitates real-time collaboration among Ericsson engineers, global ecosystem partners, and CSPs.

Exploration of technology and use cases

By fostering close cooperation, the lab encourages rapid and interactive collaboration to introduce innovations that enhance existing RAN solutions. It also supports CSPs in exploring and implementing new deployment scenarios and 5G use cases, while creating avenues for increased automation, minimizing manual tasks, and facilitating open networks. Furthermore, the lab provides an environment to delve deeper into Open RAN technologies, including virtualization, management, and orchestration.

Ecosystem expansion through Ericsson Open Lab

Ericsson Open Lab serves as a dynamic hub for innovation, acting as both a testing ground and a collaborative environment for advancing Open RAN and Cloud RAN technologies. It fosters deep cooperation with CSPs and technology partners, enabling joint exploration of new capabilities as network requirements evolve.

The Open Lab continues to expand its ecosystem by welcoming new CSPs and industry players, supporting global Open RAN deployments, accelerating technological advancements, and driving improvements in total cost of ownership.

The initiative was opened with a strong foundation of collaborators, see press release, including CSPs such as KDDI, Ooredoo, Orange, SoftBank Corp, and Turkcell, alongside key ecosystem partners like, Intel, NVIDIA, Red Hat, and Wind River, with Google Cloud and HPE joining in the past years. This growing network of partners reflects our commitment to open innovation and co-development in real-world environments.

"Industry cooperation is the cornerstone for technology evolution as we’ve seen firsthand working closely with the ecosystem to drive network transformation over the past decade. Through our longstanding collaboration with Ericsson we’ve helped communications service providers drive network virtualization and we look forward to the promise of the Ericsson Open Lab to bring together a diverse set of companies that will further generate RAN innovation."

- Cristina Rodriguez, Vice President in the Network and Edge Group and General Manager of the Comms Solutions Group

"Distributed edge cloud will increasingly become critical to next generation networks. Able to lower the cost to deploy and manage 5G far edge services by up to 75%, Wind River Studio addresses service providers’ complex needs surrounding deployment and management of a physically distributed ultra-low latency, cloud-native infrastructure. We look forward to collaborating with Ericsson and the Open Lab to collectively help service providers meet their 5G objectives."

- Paul Miller, CTO, Wind River

"An open ecosystem, where collaboration drives innovation, is key to deploying public and private AI-on-5G networks. We’re working with Ericsson and other partners at the Open Lab on software-defined, GPU- and DPU-accelerated solutions that drive speed and efficiency in creating new products and services as dozens of industries adopt AI-on-5G across their businesses."

- Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President of Telecom at NVIDIA

"Next-generation networks will be built with greater flexibility and more choice, driven by architecture disaggregation and open ecosystem collaboration. We are proud to participate in this project, bringing Red Hat’s open hybrid cloud technologies to help enable Ericsson and service providers to deploy cloud-native applications at scale."

- Chris Wright, Chief Technology Officer, Red Hat
