Despite the imminent arrival of 5G and growing popularity of 4G, HSPA remains an extensively deployed technology and important market. Since the initial development of HSDPA and HSUPA a decade ago, the HSPA specifications have evolved in order to handle issues such as higher peak rates, DL and UL MIMO, smartphone signaling, multicarrier and multipoint transmissions. This book describes on detail the features standardized in releases 5 to 13. Apart from the details of the features, an insight into the underlying technologies is provided. Furthermore, HSPA performance is reviewed, considering not just numbers themselves, but the framework within which performance can be assessed and the factors and trade-offs that are the basis for optimization. In addition, an insight into the spectrum availability and RF characteristics of HSPA is provided. This thorough review of HSPA, placed within a context of the underlying motivations of the evolution and standardization processes provides a complete reference text for students, engineers and network operators interested in the technology.
