Gaming to learn - a look at Ericsson Technology Traveler
Here at Ericsson, we are committed to making learning a habit that matters. So, when those of us in the Learning and Development team heard about the challenges our recruitment office was facing, we immediately set out to develop the right solution. We knew from the start that something both exciting and enjoyable was needed, and we also knew that we wanted to stay away from traditional classroom learning styles. In short, we wanted something fun, new, and exciting.
That’s when we began developing Ericsson Technology Traveler! Using the latest in game-based learning, Ericsson Technology Traveler is an interactive simulation game designed to help users gain a better understanding of telecom technologies in the context of our company history. The game has since become a favorite among many users globally, and we’ve already seen a few notable use cases involving its implementation. One of these includes the opening of our 5G smart factory earlier this year in Lewisville, Texas, where virtual reality (VR) was utilized in the months prior to opening to enable new employees to learn directly from their peers in our existing Tallinn, Estonia, smart factory 8,000km away (read more about that here!).
Learning about 5G and IoT in a fun way
Our latest mission in Ericsson Technology Traveler, Mission 9, is about 5G and IoT, and it’s open for everyone to play!
In Mission 9, your task is to create a city-wide 5G network that enables autonomous cars to operate safely and efficiently - not so far-fetched! To achieve this, you need to overcome the problems that naturally occur while conducting research in your virtual lab and apply the solutions to the network.
This is the perfect chance for you to get a better understanding of these exciting, world-transforming technologies, exploring topics such as multilayer spectrum, small cells, short-slot frameworks, and massive MIMO as well as how these can deliver improved coverage, reduced latency, and increased capacity.
As one of the most popular learning programs across our company, Ericsson Technology Traveler fits right into our advanced learning culture here at Ericsson, providing the opportunity to learn in new and fun ways about the technology that’s at the heart of our company. The game can even be played in VR, and in these pandemic-facing times, people working from home will be fully able to enjoy this learning opportunity and the unique glimpse into the latest 5G technologies it provides.
