An Introduction to Cloud technology at our France R&D site with Cloud RAN Team Lead, Martha Vlachou-Konchylaki

Available in English Français
My name is Martha Vlachou-Konchylaki and I lead the Cloud RAN team at the Ericsson R&D site in Massy, France. It’s a very exciting time for us, as the teams are newly set up and are already playing an important role in helping operators’ businesses transform their journeys and adopt cloud solutions. Let me tell you more about what we are trying to build.
An Introduction to Cloud technology at our France R&D site with Cloud RAN Team Lead, Martha Vlachou-Konchylak

Cloud Technology

Cloud RAN refers to realizing RAN functions over a generic compute platform instead of a purpose-built hardware platform and managing the RAN application virtualization using cloud-native principles. Cloudification of RAN begins with running selected 5G RAN network functions in containers through Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware platforms which will allow HW/SW disaggregation.

In Ericsson’s R&D site in Massy, France, we are building a Cloud RAN team which will have the capability to take on full responsibility for Cloud RAN projects for network automation. Above all, whatever we develop we own, this gives us as a team with a lot of freedom to make decisions.

We also get the chance to work closely with other teams in R&D such as the Artificial Intelligence (AI) team in Massy, or other Network Automation teams in Europe, as we work to automate the entire software development lifecycle.

A special feature in our team is our focus on machine learning (ML) functionality supporting network automation. In practice, we are creating ML-based, cloud-native applications, a skill that is quite in demand right now in the industry. We work with technologies like Azure, AWS, Google Cloud with the latest and greatest tools.

Culture

The technology and projects we get to work on isn’t the only thing which makes our team great. There is a wonderful energy at Ericsson, we are full of motivated people, and you can see that in our offices. We work in a supportive environment where we place emphasis on work-life balance and making sure we can offer colleagues the recognition, support and ambition to choose the career path that fits them.

Like the rest of Ericsson, the Cloud RAN team has a strong culture of respecting our colleagues, giving them the freedom to make their own decisions and empowering them to do their best.

We are an international company, so we get to work with and meet a diverse set of people across the globe. I believe this cultural diversity is quite unique to Ericsson, and we also have strong stance against discrimination. I am proud of Ericsson having these values.

Career Development and Support

Ericsson is a company where you can learn and develop your skills. As a global organization with offices around the world, there is always the opportunity to work at our other R&D centers. There are growth and career development opportunities everywhere and you are empowered to create your own path.

Training for colleagues at Ericsson is a key focus. For Cloud RAN and Machine Learning, we have specific trainings available, for example, we have the possibility of joining one of Ericsson’s machine learning and artificial intelligence upskilling programs where we have partnered with universities around the globe to create a comprehensive curriculum. This is just one example, there are many more. There is so much possibility and opportunity to grow here in Cloud RAN and also across Ericsson R&D.

Join the Cloud RAN team at France R&D

We are constantly looking for passionate individuals interested in joining our innovative team to work on the latest cloud technology. As the Cloud RAN team is new, there is plenty of space for people to find their place and strengths.
