Modernizing public safety applications and services
The Faroe Islands Police is the first public safety authority in the archipelago to use the mobile broadband-enabled solution via Faroese Telecom’s LTE network. It is also among the first in Europe to have telecom 3GPP standards-based Mission-Critical-Push-to-Talk as a primary tool for critical communications.
First responders in the Faroe Islands have used analog FM radio system for several decades. While the system has been long lasting and stable, coverage and bandwidth limitations have resulted in a bottleneck for critical operations.
The daily work and duties of first responders in the Faroe Islands are now supported by next-generation critical voice, multimedia and data communication services. This is due to successful service migration from the analog legacy network to Faroese Telecom with its existing LTE network and Ericsson Group-Radio mission-critical-push-to-talk solution to cater for next generation PPDR services. The first push-to-talk call was made on March 20, 2020. Solution deployment was completed in Q4 of the same year.
The Faroe Islands Police is the first public safety authority across the islands to use 3GPP-based services. Other public safety and emergency service bodies will follow in a move that will see all responder organizations across the island chain connected via the same solution.
Customer needs
A more capable and future proof mission-critical push-to-talk application based on 3GPP standard.
The solution
Ericsson delivered training and support services to Faroese Telecom and provides best practices for using the advanced communication solutions.
Expected result
Initial replacement of voice group communication and messaging. Video and data will be gradually added when users are more familiar with the new ways of working. Using drones for video surveillance is one key use case in the rollout roadmap.
With evolution of 3GPP, Faroese Telecom will enable many new use cases and opportunities in the years to come for the Faroe Islands Police and other authorities, such as healthcare providers, the fire brigade and for public transport.
