Swisscom and Ericsson: A Performance Partnership driving network leadership

Swisscom has set the benchmark for mobile network performance in Switzerland – consistently ranking #1 across all major evaluations. Behind this success is a long-standing partnership with Ericsson, focused on delivering innovation, automation, and operational excellence that empowers Swisscom to lead with confidence.

Highlights

Sustained leadership

Swisscom has won all major mobile network benchmarks in Switzerland since 2017, despite fierce competition. This consistent performance reflects a commitment to quality, innovation, and outstanding customer experience. Ericsson’s technology and strategic collaboration have been key to this success, enabling Swisscom to stay ahead in a competitive market.

“Our long-standing partnership with Ericsson has been a cornerstone of Swisscom’s network leadership. Together, we’ve not only reclaimed our top position but also made a strong contribution to excellence in mobile connectivity.”

Innovation through collaboration

With a 100% Ericsson Radio Access Network (RAN), Packet Core, Unified Data Management (UDM) and IP Multimedia Service (IMS), an Ericsson telecom cloud infrastructure, and a strong joint R&D foundation in all these domains, Swisscom has deployed some of the most advanced network technologies available.

From Carrier Aggregation, Advanced Antenna Systems with Massive MIMO and Cognitive Network Solutions AI-based automations, to advanced Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) optimizations, these innovations have delivered measurable gains in throughput, latency, and jitter, ensuring that Swisscom’s 4G LTE and 5G NR networks remain best-in-class.

Over the years, Swisscom has also invested heavily in performance observability and advanced analytics, using, for example, Ericsson Expert Analytics software, which has enabled Swisscom to implement targeted performance improvements. In the Packet Core and UDM space, Swisscom and Ericsson are jointly charting the way toward a new cloud-native future with the introduction of the Ericsson cloud-native Dual Mode Core. This solution features advanced automation, delivering order-of-magnitude improvements in operational efficiency compared to their virtual network function deployment.

Efficiency at scale

Swisscom now operates a network that is three times larger and handles four times the traffic it did in 2017, while simultaneously decreasing operational expenditure.

This has been made possible through automation, AI/ML-driven optimization, and the continuous introduction of new software releases with enhanced functionality.

For a long time, Swisscom has been testing new RAN software every two weeks and deploying the latest release nationwide several times a year. More recently, Swisscom has developed automation for its new dual-mode core network, enabling the deployment and end-to-end integration of multiple network functions into the production network within days rather than the weeks or months it previously required.

Looking to the future, Swisscom is aiming to raise the bar, enabling frequent software releases across its entire mobile network, facilitated by automation. It is a clear example of how smart engineering can scale sustainably.

“Working with Ericsson, we’ve built a network that’s not just fast – it’s intelligent. By integrating AI-driven automation, cloud-native architectures, and real-time analytics, we’ve laid a solid foundation for fast adaptation and scalability.”

Challenges

In 2016, Swisscom faced a turning point. After stepping down from the top position in external network benchmarks, the company needed to act decisively to regain leadership – reclaiming top position in network quality and user experience – and maintain it in a rapidly evolving market.

Once the first major milestone of the partnership was reached in 2017, as Swisscom successfully reclaimed the #1 benchmark position, new challenges emerged, including:

  • Meeting rising demands for 5G performance across both urban and rural areas
  • Managing increasing cost pressures while continuing to invest in hardware and software upgrades
  • Sustaining and increasing operational efficiency despite limited business growth
  • Increasing energy efficiency in the RAN to enable sustainable network growth
  • Increasing threat landscape, leading to the need for innovative security solutions

The challenges are not just technical – they were strategic: to deliver a world-class network experience while keeping operations lean and future-ready.

Solution

To meet these challenges, Swisscom launched a Strategic Performance Partnership with Ericsson in 2017. This collaboration was the beginning of bringing together Swisscom’s ambition and Ericsson’s full technology portfolio to drive measurable outcomes.

The solutions implemented over the years have each addressed one or more challenges. Through a joint elaboration of the network evolution strategy and with close co-development, Swisscom and Ericsson have deployed a broad range of Ericsson’s 4G and 5G solutions, including:

  • Carrier aggregation and TDD massive MIMO
  • Introduction of a cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core with GitOps-based lifecycle management
  • Unified RAN automation using the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform and AI/ML-powered rApps
  • Advanced analytics from Ericsson Expert Analytics to support data-driven decisions
  • Enhanced security through Ericsson Security Manager

This comprehensive approach enabled Swisscom to modernize its network, optimize performance, and scale efficiently, while also helping the Ericsson portfolio develop to serve the global market with top-notch mobile network performance.

Going forward, Swisscom and Ericsson are turning our joint attention to how we can develop not only the Best Network, but the Smartest Network, maintaining world-class performance with even more clever and sustainable solutions.

“Our partnership with Swisscom is a prime example of this. Together, we are implementing pioneering solutions to advance network excellence and AI-powered automation, while ensuring that Swisscom’s network continues to lead the industry as best in class.”

Results

The partnership has delivered outstanding results, both in performance and efficiency.

Key outcomes include:

  • Reclaiming the #1 benchmark position in Switzerland in 2017 and maintaining it every year since
  • Achieving the highest-ever Connect benchmark score of 981 in 2023
  • Launching Europe’s first commercial 5G network in 2019
  • Reaching 99% population coverage with 5G in 2025
  • Operating a network three times larger and with four times larger traffic than in 2017 – while decreasing operational expenditure at the same time.
