Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) continues to invest in France and has just inaugurated its new broadcast and media services facility in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris. The Mediadome is one of Europe's most advanced broadcast and media centers, housing a 3,000 square meter state-of-the-art TV facility as well as the offices of Canal+Overseas. The center currently manages production, post-production and distribution of 30 television channels, as well as non-linear, on-demand services.

The opening ceremony on December 3 2014 coincided with a Swedish state visit to France and was attended by Mikael Damberg, Sweden's Minister for Enterprise and Innovation. The new center is part of Ericsson's strategy to grow its business in France to support the ongoing transformation of the broadcast and media services industry.

With media content now available on TV screens, smartphones, desktop computers and tablets, video will account for more than half of all mobile data traffic by 2020, according to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report.

New ways of consuming programming — video on demand, replay TV and streaming video — are having a significant impact on the traditional broadcaster business models, who increasingly benefit from partners that specialize in developing new services and adapting capacity and infrastructure to meet the new requirements in a cost-effective manner.

Ericsson helps broadcasters to manage the complexity of today's media landscape and its increasingly mobile nature. In recent years, has signed agreements with broadcasters such as NPO and NOS (Netherlands), Canal+, TV Monde and France 24 (France), HBO Nordic (Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden), and many others.

As a result of the Red Bee Media acquisition in 2014, Ericsson now has broadcast and media services agreements with new customers such as the BBC, BSkyB, BT Sport, Canal Digital, Channel 4, Channel 5, EE, ITV, UKTV, UPC, Virgin Media, and many others.

Jacques du Puy, Head of Canal+ Overseas, says: “As a leader in the creation and distribution of premium and thematic channels, our core focus is on producing the quality content and programming that our customers rely on to keep them informed and up-to-date. We therefore need a partner we can trust to manage the ingestion, technical production and playout for our 22 core channels. Ericsson’s expertise in both broadcasting and managed services allows us to deliver premium-quality services to our subscribers.”

Thorsten Sauer, Head of Broadcast and Media Services in Ericsson, says: "For Ericsson, it is very important to be close to our customers while providing them with the benefits of the global scale and capability of our company. Viewers increasingly have the opportunity to watch their favorite content on a smartphone or tablet - wherever they are and whenever they want. This is having a significant impact on media consumption patterns and is driving rapid development in broadcast technologies. As a leading provider in this area, Ericsson offers a wide range of services to support this transformation. Mediadome is a landmark in this development and our capability strategy."

The company has developed the Mediadome facility to provide services to multiple customers and be an integral part of the network of other broadcast and media centers, and to develop services and expertise both inside and outside of France, and integrate its capabilities with those of Red Bee Media.

Ericsson’s broadcast and media services utilize the global services expertise of a leader in the managed services industry to help content owners, broadcasters and distributors improve their business performance.

Every year, Ericsson manages more than 2.7 million hours of programming in more than 90 languages for over 330 TV channels, and provides 200,000 hours of captioning every year, 80,000 of which is delivered live.

Ericsson also has the experience and expertise required to manage technical platforms and deliver operational services related to content management, broadcasting, distribution and supply.

Every day, viewers worldwide watch programming prepared, managed and distributed by more than 2,500 Ericsson broadcast and media services professionals in France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Australia, Germany and Spain.
