Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) today said that Verizon Wireless has delivered the United States’ first LTE Multicast services over a commercial 4G LTE network using Ericsson’s LTE Broadcast solution. The network equipment supplied by Ericsson supported live video services as part of a demonstration at the Indy Motor Speedway in the weeks leading up to the Indy 500.
Johan Wibergh, Head of Business Unit Networks at Ericsson says: "Verizon has taken the lead by being first in the US to deliver video multicast services over its commercial LTE network in such a challenging environment. Ericsson’s LTE Broadcast solution is designed to deliver the high performance and great video experience that Verizon’s LTE Multicast Service demands at events like the Indy 500."
On race day (May 25), Verizon LTE Multicast capabilities will be demonstrated via a series of cameras deployed both trackside and in-car providing IndyCar teams with real time race visibility. Meanwhile, live video of the race will highlight a richer fan experience at track enabled by this new technology and platform.
The ultra-dense user environment associated with huge sporting events can be a challenge for mobile networks. But they also offer a key opportunity for the mobile network provider to enhance performance with the improved network efficiency of multicast while being able to create new fan services enabling new revenue opportunities for both the network provider and content/rights owners. Ericsson’s end-to-end LTE Broadcast solution addresses these network demands and service opportunities.
