For the first time, more people live in cities than in rural areas, bringing new challenges. ICT is playing a critical role in addressing these challenges and benefiting society.

While cities harness the human and technological resources that result in improved productivity, societal development and economic growth, they are also often sites of poverty, inequality and environmental degradation.

Considering the importance of a multi-sectorial, multi-stakeholder and multi-level approach to sustainable urban development, this paper provides an initial discussion of the potential role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the new urban agenda. This paper has been prepared by Ericsson, with technical input from the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).
