Modern digital services like video streaming depend on a complex and interconnected technology ecosystem. While standards such as cellular and Wi-Fi provide underlying connectivity, seamless video streaming is truly made possible by innovations in media compression, delivery, security, cloud computing, networking, and user interface.

      Standardized technology for video streaming

While Ericsson is well-known for developing cellular standards, and has been a key innovator in Wi-Fi standards such as W-Fi 6, we have also played a pivotal role in the other dimensions of the multimedia ecosystem. For example, Ericsson has been at the forefront of the development of standardized technologies such as video codecs for over four decades. We have been a leading contributor to H.265/HEVC, the world’s most widely deployed video codec that can best support features such as 4K resolution and HDR color gamut.

While we create innovations that, once incorporated into standards, become widely accessible and enable deployment at scale across markets, we also create highly innovative engineering solutions that are protected by implementation patents. Although these innovations are not included in formal standards specifications, they deliver scalability, reliability, and user experience in real-world streaming systems.

Licensing often occurs through bilateral agreements, which allow tailored solutions, including cross‑licensing and multi‑year partnerships. Patent pools, such as those used in video licensing, can also provide efficiency and scale in fragmented markets.

Together, these models help ensure broad access to proven technologies while royalties help drive continued investment in video innovation moving forward.
