Evolved Packet Gateway
Ericsson Evolved Packet Gateway provides the Serving Gateway, PDN Gateway, User Plane Function and Traffic Detection functionality for GSM, WCDMA, LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi and CDMA interworking, allowing for seamless transitions between the access types.
Our Evolved Packet Gateway has been deployed across hundreds of customers networks globally, supporting many mobile networks with its rich feature set, the EPG has achieved world-class in-service-performance (99.999%) during extreme traffic conditions.
Available as a physical and virtual network function, the EPG scales up to support worlds’ largest networks and scales down to enable new industry verticals. Our latest release provides new levels of network scalability, and performance with the network design flexibility and easier operations introduced by Control and User Plane Split (CUPS).
5G-ready complete gateway
EPG makes it possible to quickly launch 5G services by supporting, both 5G NSA as S/PGw and for 5G SA, the EPG can be configured as a UPF. Customers will experience a direct improvement by seeing a higher throughput with support for 5G high peak rates at an even lower latency than in LTE EPC networks.
EPG introduces new capabilities to further differentiate operators' portfolio in the mobile broadband area (data traffic optimization and on-demand traffic classification) and monetize new verticals (massive IoT and critical IoT).
Cost-efficient network design
Control and User Plane separation (CUPS) gives operators more choices to cost effectively design their networks to meet 5G, industrial IoT and Critical IoT user cases allowing for example to scale out the UP for traffic growth and scale down the UP for IoT Cores. CUPS introduces a split architecture and new interfaces for both the S/PGw in 4G and as part of the SMF/UPF in 5G.
Leading Performance and flexible deployment
EPG supports multi terabit performance in both virtual and native. EPG also supports many techniques to optimize native, NFV and cloud infrastructure deployments including egress/ingress optimization, network scaling and cloud native I/O support.
