Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform

Portfolio

EIAP is an open platform for multi-vendor, multi-technology RAN automation and orchestration.

It implements Open RAN Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) function and takes this forward on the multi-technology aspect with the capabilities to manage not only Open RAN and Ericsson’s Cloud RAN technology, but purpose-built multi-vendor RAN networks as well.
The platform provides both design and runtime environments for RAN automation use cases across physical and Cloud RAN. The design environment allows for rapid application development and life cycle management of applications. The runtime environment enables multi-vendor applications to run on the platform, access data, and control network elements.

A developer ecosystem is included with the platform, and aims to provide the developers with all SDK, APIs and tools required to drive design, development and deployment of rApps, with things like tutorials, sample applications, API descriptions, examples and documentation, build utilities and helper libraries and modules.

Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform aims to support the R1, A1, O1, and O2 interfaces as the definitions mature, and provides a safe and feature-rich execution environment for rApps that implement diverse use cases in the area of RAN automation.

What is Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform?

Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform is the name for Ericsson´s automation product implementing Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) functionalities as defined for Open RAN, including, but not limited to, support for Non-Real Time RAN Intelligent Controller (Non-RT RIC) and other automation use cases such as Self-Organizing Networks functionality. Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform is a RAN-focused automation product. In other words, Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform is Ericsson’s approach to Open RAN SMO entity. Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform is a new OSS offering, complementing existing products & target solutions and supports both purpose-built RAN for LTE and 5G, and Cloud RAN. It can host individually life cycle managed applications that execute network automation routines. It will support the (yet to be fully specified) R1 interface to allow execution of applications from Ericsson, customers, and 3rd parties. Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform provides a developer ecosystem with SDKs, frameworks and components that support the rapid development of automation applications, as well as an online design environment which supports the design and tuning of runtime components and ML algorithm training. Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform provides commonly used functionality to access network data and control network elements and functions, as well as mediation for O1, O2 and A1 together with legacy NBIs. Our aim is to enable an ecosystem that includes the CSPs, 3rd party application providers and partners. Details will be provided as it becomes available. The architecture is partly based on ONAP’s architectural principles and building blocks.

Handling multi-vendor RAN complexity and scalability
  • Provides management and orchestration of multi-vendor RAN networks over open interfaces

  • Automates third-party purpose-built RAN via EMS integration leveraging OSSii

  • Ericsson has successfully deployed Network Design and Optimization (NDO) applications in 9 million cells worldwide, half of which are in multi-vendor RAN environments.

Multi-technology, enabling adoption of Open RAN
  • Supports automation of both purpose-built and Cloud RAN/Open RAN networks.

  • Ericsson is a major contributor to Open RAN working groups.

  • Ericsson is launching rApps that make the best use of Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform, designed to maximize network ROI across purpose-built and Cloud RAN/Open RAN.

Open software development kit (SDK) empowers rApps developers to maximizing ROI
  • Enables development and deployment of rApps from communication service providers and third-party vendors

  • Intelligent Automation Platform SDK has been successfully used to create deployment and optimization rApps on a single common platform.

  • Ericsson strongly supports openness and innovation as a major contributor to Open RAN working groups, multiple global standards and industry bodies including 3GPP, ONAP and TMF, as well as being a founding member of OSSii

Connects RAN  to network slicing, management, assurance and orchestration for end-to-end experience
  • Supports RAN and OSS evolution strategy

  • Handles disaggregated RAN complexity

  • Supports rapid innovation, agility and fast time-to-market, decoupling development and life cycle management
