Ericsson to announce winners of Innovation Awards at IIT, Delhi today

10 Projects were shortlisted amongst the 67 entries received from seven IITs and these projects were financially supported by Ericsson for developing the Proof of Concept. Finals to take place today at IIT Delhi, where Ericsson will select top two winning projects that will be incubated with a financial support of INR 10 lakhs each.

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) in association with the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer (FITT) will announce the winners of ‘Ericsson Innovation Awards’ today .The top 5 student projects will be presented before a live audience wherein the Jury will select the Top 2 Projects that will be supported for Incubation at IIT approved technology business incubators. Ericsson Innovation Awards were instituted last year at the IITs in order to promote and recognize the spirit of innovation within the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Mr Prakash Iyer, CEO, Mumbai Indians and an Author, Coach and Motivational Speaker, will be the Chief Guest at the event.

A total of 67 projects were submitted by IIT students from Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi. The Ericsson Innovation Awards seek student innovations in areas such as web design, cloud computing, storage and networking, human-machine interface, embedded and hardware system design, MIMO (multiple-input, multiple-output), machine-to-machine/Internet of Things, software-defined networking, open source, signal processing, graphics and visualization, as well as research.

Chris Houghton, Head of Region India, Ericsson said "Ericsson has a strong history of innovation and these awards represent our endeavor to foster the spirit of innovation amongst students .The Winning Projects need to score high in terms of parameters like innovativeness, commercial feasibility , scalability and will be supported by Ericsson through the incubation period". Each shortlisted proposal was given financial support by Ericsson to complete the initial prototype within two months.

The Jury for the Ericsson Innovation Awards comprised of Industry experts ; IIT, Delhi Faculty and Ericsson experts.

Recognition of Facial Gestures

This product aims to recognize inaudible speech using electromyography.

Location wise traffic analysis based on social network data

A web-application to provide real time traffic updates to users using posts on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter etc. Each of these updates shall have information such as date, time, location of traffic jam, and cause of the same.

Smart Paper Calendar Device (SPCD) for everyone including visually impaired

The primary user interface of SPCD consists of a monthly calendar and a clock. The calendar part is made of ordinary paper/plastic sheet which does not consume power while displaying calendar. The dates are engraved in the sheet along with braille digits, making SPCD equally useful for visually impaired. SPCD can automatically change the calendar to any month/year by scrolling the paper/plastic sheet.

Guardian

Guardian device is a complete stand-alone personalized human security device which can use any type of communication system such as internet, SMS, or Near Field Communication to alert your loved ones when in a distress situation. It also uses multiple cellular phone towers to transmit data and triangulate a victim's position.

EDA (Education Data Analytics)

It will be a platform for detailed user level data analytics. Some of the functionalities it will provide are:

  • Real time analytics on what users (students in our case) are doing thus facilitating educators
  • Tools to filter, analyze and visualize this data
  • Capability to create a parent-child relationship and add synthetic/computed data
  • Intuitive interface, thus enabling use by field experts (who may not have prior programming experience)

3D Display and User Interface (without Stereoscopy)

An interface which displays any object as if it were a real 3 dimensional entity, using the front camera of a mobile device. This will be a first of its kind application as without using stereoscopy, it will estimate the viewer’s location and accordingly, it will display the object.

iDitya Solar Assistant

A complete DIY solar power system that a user can buy off the shelf and install it completely on his own. The idea is to develop a mobile app based on the Google© Android platform that will make the installation process extremely intuitive and simple.

Advanced Breathanalyzer Helmet

This is the design of an arrangement which makes it mandatory for the driver to wear his helmet and have a tolerable alcohol level in his breath so as to start his vehicle. The helmet analyses the alcohol content in the driver’s breath and directs the vehicle through a wireless signal to start or stop accordingly.

Smart Earphone

 

A new wearable device for everyone that can amplify and attenuate selective sounds. The user can decide whom/what he/she wants to selectively hear and at what volume. The device will be integrated to smartphone via an App. All the audio signal processing will be done by the App only.

Smart Ward–Automating patient monitoring system in hospital wards

A wearable device which will measure the vital parameters of each patient and send it to the computer screen (or mobile/ tablet through android application) of the nurse on duty. The application in nurse's phone (or computer screen) will show the vitals of each patient and their comparison with the previous value and alerts on critical situations.There will be indications given if the patient’s condition is problematic.
