Ericsson achieves the world's first in-field joint LTM demonstration with KDDI and MediaTek
- Ericsson, KDDI Corporation, and MediaTek Inc. completed the world’s first in-field joint demonstration of L1/L2 Triggered Mobility (LTM) using Ericsson’s Radio Access Network (RAN).
- Ericsson Low-latency Mobility—part of the 5G Advanced Critical IoT subscription—shortens data interruption at cell changes by 25 percent for near‑seamless mobility.
- The success of this demonstration opens the door for on-the-move mobile real time applications in Japan across XR, autonomous/remote operations, industrial automation and public safety, alongside AI and cloud.
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), in collaboration with KDDI Corporation (hereafter KDDI) and MediaTek Inc., has completed the world's first*1 in-field joint demonstration of Layer 1/Layer 2 (L1/L2) Triggered Mobility (LTM) on Ericsson’s Radio Access Network (RAN)—showing how Low‑latency Mobility can reduce data interruption at cell change by 25 percent, compared to using legacy Layer 3 mobility.
Ericsson Low‑latency Mobility, based on 3GPP LTM and included in the 5G Advanced Critical IoT subscription, uses innovative software algorithms to shorten data interruption during cell changes—improving user experience and service continuity.
Since the introduction of L1/L2 Triggered Mobility (LTM) in 3GPP Release 18, networks can use lower-layer signaling to reduce signaling overhead and reduce data interruption at cell change, resulting in almost seamless connectivity.
For communications service providers, a standards‑based, scalable approach accelerates the introduction of time‑critical services, enhances network efficiency and future‑proofs 5G Advanced investments. Ericsson’s design reuses existing Layer‑3 measurements, lowers UE requirements, enables early DL/UL synchronization with a single trigger and supports devices with different capabilities.
For people and enterprises, near‑seamless mobility is vital for XR and cloud applications, immersive video conferencing, and mission critical operations; reducing interruption at cell change prevents user frustration, churn, negative user sentiment, safety risks, traffic disruptions, production and equipment outages.
Kazuyuki Yoshimura, Senior Managing Executive Officer at KDDI, says: “KDDI is advancing the enhancement of its 5G SA network to meet the growing demand for high quality, low latency connectivity in the AI era. Our world first joint demonstration of the 5G Advanced ‘LTM’ technology with Ericsson and MediaTek confirms significant improvements in mobility performance and reduced interruption during cell transitions—capabilities that are essential for AI powered real time applications, XR, remote operations, and other advanced use cases. KDDI will continue to reinforce our network foundation and contribute to Japan’s digital transformation.”
HC Hwang, General Manager of Wireless Communication Systems and Partnerships at MediaTek, says: “As a global leader in providing connectivity solutions, we view this collaboration with KDDI and Ericsson as a significant milestone in the development of LTM technology which will ensure smoother connections and more reliable handovers for people who are always moving."
Chafic Nassif, Senior Vice President and Head of Ericsson North East Asia, says: " We are pleased that KDDI has taken the lead in adopting Ericsson’s 5G Advanced and introducing Low‑latency Mobility. The low latency achieved is essential for remote control and autonomous driving and can contribute to enhancing Japan's user mobile experience, as well as industry operational efficiency, safety, and security. As a trusted ally to Japan, Ericsson will continue to support the country’s digital transformation and economic security together with KDDI."
