Ericsson and Tele2 sign ENGINE contract for fixed telephony net

      Press release
      Feb 04, 2002 11:00 (GMT +00:00)

Tele2, that operates and develops one of Norway's largest networks for
telephony and Internet, has signed an agreement with Ericsson for the
migration of Tele2's fixed network. This will enable Tele2 to establish a
future proof, voice/data network enabling new introduction of services. The
      Implementation started in early January.

With this deal, Ericsson and Tele 2 are paving the way for ENGINE to migrate
Tele2's existing network from a proprietary circuit-switched to an open,
layered packet-based network. Ericsson will supply new hardware and software
      for the fixed network.

The ENGINE network will first be rolled out in Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim and
Bodø. Tele 2 is the second largest operator of telephony and internet services
      in Norway.

"The ENGINE concept will enable Tele2 to make substantial cost savings in the
core network", says Ole Martin Gunhildsbu, Technical Director of Tele2 Norway.
"We will in the near future also be able to integrate traditional fixed
telephony with IP based data network services in the same network. This will
open some new business opportunities, and at the same time it will further
strengthen Tele2s cost advantage in the Norwegian market."

With the new network Tele2 can start the migration from single service
networks to multi-service networks based on IP.

"This contract is yet another but very important confirmation of Ericsson's
leadership in the multi-service networks market," says Anders Rian, Sales
Manager at Ericsson AS. "The ENGINE solution represents a profitable option
for Tele2, rationalizing their fixed network and making full use of existing
infrastructure without compromising reliability, flexibility and security."

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications
through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions
in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful
      communication companies in the world.
