Ericsson chosen in Altice Portugal for fixed Telephony
- Ericsson to implement Multimedia Telephony Application Server (MTAS) in Altice Portugal network
- Implementation of Ericsson’s fixed telephony services includes network functions virtualization infrastructure (NFVI) and system integration and support for MTAS migration

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) has been selected by Altice Portugal to implement fixed telephony services as the company’s main telephony application server vendor. As part of the deal, Ericsson is already supplying Altice Portugal with the complete solution namely with Ericsson’s Mobile Telephony Application Server (MTAS), Network Functions Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI) and system integration and support services.
Delivering high-quality voice services with support for the public switched telephone network (PSTN)-equivalent regulatory and supplementary services, Ericsson’s MTAS supports legacy telephony services as well as future services, such as multi-device applications and multimedia services over multiple accesses (including fixed, mobile, and Wi-Fi).
Set for the first half of 2020, the implementation of the Ericsson MTAS AS will allow service and architecture evolution via-a-vis the existing solution and will enable Altice Portugal to run first-line communication services for both fixed and mobile networks through a convergent solution, leveraging industry-leading methods and tools for multivendor migration without system disruption.
Luís Alveirinho, Chief Technology Officer, Altice Portugal, says: “Expanding our long-term partnership with Ericsson with the implementation of its fixed telephony services including network functions virtualization infrastructure (NFVI) is in line with our strategy to modernize the network focus on virtualization and to deliver the best possible service to our growing customer base.”
Luis Silva, Head of Ericsson Portugal, says: “This deal represents a big step in fixed mobile convergence for our partner Altice Portugal, where the same IMS core network handling VoLTE subscribers will now also handle its fixed residential voice services. The efficiency, capacity, and reliability of Ericsson MTAS will bring the much-needed impact that will be standard for the next generation of telephony services, and we are proud to be a part of the evolution toward future end user services for Altice Portugal.”
