This is in addition to the 50,000 base stations included in the 2019 network modernization deal, doubling the speed of Tele2 Russia’s network transformation to 5G by 2023. More than 100,000 base stations will be deployed across the country as part of the new three-year network modernization contract.

Ericsson supported Tele2 Russia’s infrastructure upgrade with the deployment of 30,000 5G-ready base stations across Russia from 2019 to 2020. Expanding the network to include 100,000 5G-ready base stations will allow Tele2 Russia to significantly increase network capacity and data transfer rates, as well as prepare the network for the rapid launch of the 5G standard.

Alexey Telkov, CTO of Tele2 Russia, says: “To maintain high quality telecom services, Tele2 invests heavily into the technological development of the network. The pandemic accelerated the pace of network development to new speeds, due to the explosive growth in traffic consumption and the active use of digital services from customers. Since 2015, we’ve been installing 5G-ready base stations in the capital, and our project with Ericsson and the pace of its implementation increases the penetration of the most advanced equipment throughout the country”.

Sebastian Tolstoy, Head of Ericsson in Russia, says: “We are pleased to contribute to the development of the Tele2 network in Russia. 5G support is implemented across the entire line of Ericsson’s portfolio, and Ericsson equipment ensures compatibility and continuity of product lines of different generations which allows Tele2 to reduce capital and operating costs during network construction and expansion. Ericsson’s 5G Innovation Hub in Moscow gives Russian service providers the opportunity to test innovations on live 5G and IoT networks. The Ericsson Academy, our training center co-located at the Innovation Hub, trains over 1,000 specialists from Russian service providers and students each year”.

In August 2019 Tele2 and Ericsson launched Russia's first 5G zone in central Moscow on Tele2's commercial network. The non-stop outdoor 5G coverage is live in Tverskaya Street, the busiest part of the Russian capital, stretching between Red Square to Sadovoe Ring. The 5G pilot zone is deployed in the 28 GHz band in non-standalone (NSA) mode for mobile broadband services with ultra-high speeds.
