Ericsson and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia establish Innovation Center for 5G in Malaysia

  • Malaysia’s first Innovation Center established to research and test 5G technology and use cases, featuring demonstrations and a learning space with specifically designed learning modules
  • Learning programs expected to benefit 2,000 students over three years and prepare them for employment in the new digital economy
  • Malaysia takes a closer step towards the vision of Smart Digital Nation by 2020 and becoming one of the top countries leading technology-enabled economic transformation in South East Asia and Oceania region

In collaboration with the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), and endorsed by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education, Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) today launches the UTM-Ericsson Innovation Center for 5G (IC5G) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The first of its kind in Malaysia, the center is located in UTM’s Kuala Lumpur Campus, occupying building space of 280 sqm. IC5G features 5G innovations, a 5G research lab and a 5G learning space, which is expected to benefit around 2,000 students from institutions and industries in Malaysia over three years.

The opening of the center follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Ericsson and UTM through its Wireless Communication Centre (WCC) in October, 2015. Both parties have agreed to undertake activities that will facilitate research linkages, trade and information exchange in order to work on joint research projects, and to realize the impact of 5G on industries and society.

Launched by the Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh, Minister of Higher Education, the center will help drive the nation towards becoming the hub for competence and innovation for 5G.

Idris Jusoh, says: “Initiatives such as the IC5G are encouraging, as we take a step closer to becoming a Smart Digital Nation by 2020. This center will also better position Malaysia at the forefront of 5G and among the countries leading technology-enabled economic transformation in the South East Asia and Oceania region.”

Todd Ashton, Head of Ericsson Malaysia and Sri Lanka, says: “Globally, 5G is expected to begin its commercial rollout in 2020 and will enable a wide variety of use cases. According to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report, Asia Pacific will be the second fastest growing region for 5G subscriptions with 10 percent of all subscriptions being 5G in 2022. As part of our long-term commitment to Malaysia and its citizens, Ericsson is bringing the latest advanced technology and knowledge, and we believe that the opening of IC5G will help realize our vision of a Networked Society in Malaysia, where every person and every industry is empowered to reach their full potential.”

Professor Datuk Ir. Dr. Wahid bin Omar, Vice Chancellor, UTM, says: “UTM aspires to be a world-class institution of academia and technological excellence. IC5G is a testament of a successful public-private partnership to ensure Malaysia is on the right path to be digitally transformed by 2020. Together with Ericsson, our aim for this center is to foster the development of 5G technology and use cases in Malaysia. This will also prepare future generations to be more technologically competent and employable in the new digital economy through specifically tailored learning modules with experts from Ericsson and UTM.”

5G is the foundation for realizing the full potential of the Networked Society. 5G will enable organizations to move into new markets and build new revenue streams with radically new business models and use cases, including Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The new capabilities of 5G span across several dimensions, including very high data rates, very low latency, ultra-high reliability, energy efficiency and extreme device densities.
