Ericsson and Telstra complete an Australian first, successfully trialling L4S solution for Time-Critical Communication to revolutionise gaming in Australia
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) together with Telstra today announced the successful trials of Ericsson’s Low Latency Low Loss Scalable (L4S) throughput technology on Telstra’s commercial network. This Australian first technology milestone was achieved at Telstra’s 5G Innovation Centre on the Gold Coast and will be implemented across Telstra’s 5G network.
L4S is a software solution for rate adaptation that enables time-critical communication on a 5G network, designed for emerging 5G applications that are time-critical in nature. The solution enables applications to react to network congestion delays and proactively ensure consistent low latency with high reliability by adapting bitrates in real time, which is currently not available on existing networks.
Demonstrated through an interactive cloud game, this achievement will significantly improve the user experience for all of Telstra’s customers. This will benefit existing use cases like cloud gaming over 5G, which require data-intensive graphics to be sent to the consumer’s device. This industry milestone will also set the standard to unlocking new use cases at scale such as augmented reality, virtual reality and remote control of machines and vehicles leveraging 5G public and private networks.
Channa Seneviratne, Executive, Technology Development & Solutions, Telstra said: “We have been working with Ericsson as a technology partner to constantly improve the customer experience via enhanced network capabilities. Time-Critical Communication tools such as L4S will allow us to deliver consistent low latency, which is crucial for applications like real-time video, AR/VR, and cloud gaming.”
L4S is part of Ericsson’s Time-Critical Communication software toolbox which can be deployed as a software product for public and private 5G networks, on any 5G frequency band. The toolbox has a holistic approach to resolving delays and interruptions and combines Ericsson innovations with the 3GPP-specified ultra-reliable low latency communication (to effectively mitigate major causes of latency such as congestion and radio environment
Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson, Australia and New Zealand, says: “This Australian first achievement with Telstra is the missing piece for 5G to deliver on the promise of consistent low latency, high reliability, and superior end-user experience. Unlocking diverse latency-sensitive applications will be revolutionary for industries and enterprises such as the Australian gaming industry and beyond.”
