Ericsson partners with One New Zealand on multi-year core modernisation to deliver future-ready connectivity and security
Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and One New Zealand have signed a five-year partnership to modernise the New Zealand connectivity company’s core network and enable the deployment of advanced 5G capabilities.

This will deliver faster, more secure, and reliable connectivity for One NZ’s customers plus enable energy efficiency and therefore decarbonisation benefits.
The upgraded network will also enhance everyday activities such as streaming, gaming, and remote work. Businesses and government enterprises will benefit from advanced 5G capabilities, including network slicing, massive IoT, and unlocking opportunities in automation, connected vehicles, and smart cities.
As part of the modernisation, One NZ will gain the capability to open its network through open APIs, enabling the development of new applications and services. This provides the ability to innovate at speed, creating tailored solutions for customers in a range of sectors such as banking, transport, and manufacturing.
The deployment will begin in 2025, providing One NZ with a scalable, efficient, and a future-proof network with greater security to meet the country’s increasing network demands while supporting One NZ’s mission to create a better-connected Aotearoa New Zealand.
Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand, says: “Our partnership with One NZ will deliver a secure, scalable, and efficient 5G Core network that supports both consumer and enterprise innovation. With enhanced programmability, One NZ can bring new services to market faster while unlocking new business opportunities. Together, we’re enabling the connectivity and digital transformation that will drive New Zealand’s future.”
Kieran Byrne, Chief Technology Officer One NZ, says: “This partnership enables us to create a high-performing, more secure, and resilient network with environmental sustainability benefits including a more energy efficient network. It will support our customers’ needs today while unlocking new possibilities through open APIs and programmability. By allowing businesses and developers to innovate using our network, we are creating an ecosystem that will support the next wave of digital applications and services, ensuring that New Zealand remains at the forefront of connectivity and technology.”
Under the agreement, Ericsson will deploy its cloud-native dual-mode 5G Core solution replacing the legacy solutions already in place. These solutions will enable One NZ to run 4G and 5G networks on a unified platform whilst introducing automation and AI. By leveraging an open programmable network architecture and a telco-grade cybersecurity solution, One NZ will have the ability to unlock new opportunities for innovation and enterprise digitisation.
