São Paulo, October 17, 2016 - Claro and Ericsson have performed the first test with 5G technology in Brazil during Futurecom 2016. The demonstration allowed telecom operators and partners, such as academic institutes, healthcare centers, and the energy and agriculture sectors, to test 5G features on a live network. The exhibition took place at the Ericsson booth, located in Hall C.
5G will make it possible for organizations to foray into little explored markets and develop new commercial models, including applications focused on the Internet of Things. The resources available through the use of this technology include greater network capacity and increased data traffic, low energy needs, more security and reliability, as well as reduced latency.
"This is a crucial step for the evolution of mobile networks n Brazil. We are very pleased to make 5G tests feasible in the country for the first time, and to play an active part in the development of this technology. The fifth generation of mobile telephony will allow for hundreds of times more data traffic than is currently offered, with the ability to connect 100 times more devices," affirms André Sarcinelli, Director of Engineering for Claro.
"New Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can provide support for the virtual transformation of all sectors of society, as well as all industries. We are convinced that the next generation of mobile broadband and the Internet of Things, enabled by 5G, will further accelerate advancement opportunities in different industrial sectors and in new applications," says Eduardo Ricotta, Ericsson's Vice President in charge of the Business Unit in Brazil.
"Taking tests out of the labs and bringing them to the networks, as we are doing at Futurecom, is a key part of the process that will allow us to have commercial networks ready by 2020," Ricotta adds.
The agreement for testing 5G between Ericsson and América Móvil—the largest telecommunications group in Latin America and parent company of brands Claro, NET and Embratel in Brazil—was reached in 2015 during a meeting with the Brazilian government at Ericsson's headquarters in Sweden, where the company announced that it would also lend support to the country in its digital agenda.
