Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and the Sao Jose dos Campos Technology Park, through the municipality of Sao Jose dos Campos, are expanding the scope of their four-year partnership for the integration and management of an emergency response system, with the city becoming the first to introduce Ericsson's gunshot detection and climate sensors that measure temperature, humidity and CO² levels. São José dos Campos will also benefit from the introduction of a public Wi-Fi network and a smart street lighting system.
In addition to provision of an emergency response system comprising 500 connected cameras, software systems, and 205 kilometers of optical fiber cables, the partnership includes Ericsson's first contract to manage services in the public safety sector in Latin America. Sao Jose dos Campos Technology park is providing program management and supporting the development of new technologies for smart cities.
Marco Antonio Raupp, General director of the Sao Jose dos Campos Technology Park, says: "Through the Technology Park, the Municipality of Sao Jose dos Campos has invested in the development of a high-tech security solution since 2012 for implementaiton of a smart city project. Since then, it is clear that the project has contributed significantly to protecting people and public buildings in real time. With the new solutions, we expect to have even more effective numbers in relation to the protection and quality of life of the population."
Alberto Rodrigues, Head of Ericsson's Connected Industries Network, Latin America and the Caribbean, says: "São José dos Campos is the first city in Brazil to have traffic and City Guard communications systems connected by Ericsson's emergency response solution. Bringing these two new applications to the city – gunshot detection and climate sensors – is the next step in the evolution of this partnership. São José dos Campos will also adopt Ericsson's Smart Lighting solution, which uses an IoT platform to integrate street lamps with connectivity equipment and smart management systems.
Public Wi-Fi will also be available in an area to be defined by the São José dos Campos municipality, with all of the new solutions expected to be implemented by the end of the year.
The most profound example of the benefits resulting from Ericsson's partnership with São José dos Campos is the decline in the city's murder rate. Official data provided by the Secretariat of Public Security of the State of São Paulo shows that, since the city invested in security communications equipment, the murder rate has declined from 10.21 to 8.29 per 100,000 inhabitants.
Technological evolution has allowed governments to keep up with the growing needs of their citizens. The smart city scenario requires ever-increasing speed in terms of response times and access to critical information. As a result, more and more cities invest in equipment and tools to save lives and protect properties. Ericsson's objective is to always use technology to build the Networked Society, where citizens feel safe and governments can improve the quality of services provided. In order to promote these initiatives, partnerships are essential.
Ericsson has had the support of São José dos Campos Technology Park since 2012, when the Multimedia, Information and Communication Technology Center (CDTIC) was launched, with Ericsson as the anchoring partner company. The CDTIC is focused on the development of communication solutions that will help make the Networked Society a reality, especially in areas such as transportation, safety and energy efficiency, involving cloud computing, broadband, mobility and IoT on its innovation platforms.
