Ericsson indoor solutions accelerate 5G momentum

Ericsson’s pioneering indoor small cell solutions – the Ericsson Radio Dot System – are helping accelerate commercial 5G rollouts around the world. Now with new additions to the portfolio, customers such as KT in Korea and Swisscom in Switzerland are bolstering their networks and densifying indoor coverage for subscribers.

New additions to the Radio Dot portfolio

The new additions to the Ericsson Radio Dot System portfolio further strengthen the product suite for indoor 5G networks, allowing communications service providers to optimize existing assets with increased flexibility, including backhaul options and spectral holdings.

Ericsson has further enhanced its Radio Dot System with Dot 4475, a tri-band Dot (8T8R) supporting multi-band, multi-operator deployments; a new fiber solution for increased backhaul flexibility – the Hybrid Fiber IRU 1649 and the RFX 1110 (remote RFX module); and the IRU 8848 to support combined 4G and 5G deployments.  These new solutions will be generally available in the second half of 2020.

The new multi-band Dot and IRU ensure higher network speeds through carrier aggregation, including support for both 4G and 5G on one Cat cable – an industry-leading solution. This creates stable and easy migration paths for service providers. The fiber solution will also allow service providers to capitalize on pre-existing fiber in buildings, showcasing the company’s flexibility in design and delivery.

Per Narvinger, Head of Product Area Networks, Ericsson, says: “Connecting people in urban environments is increasingly important as we densify networks and deliver 5G connectivity. The addition of these new products to our already strong Ericsson Radio Dot System portfolio will make it even easier to deploy high-performing indoor 5G networks, and ensure that service providers can capitalize on existing assets with increased flexibility.”

With these new additions to the portfolio, and networks deploying across the world, the Radio Dot System is a proven 5G enabler that will continue to play a major role in the commercialization of 5G. Live with their nationwide commercial 5G network since April 3, KT, one of the leading South Korean service providers, has begun trialing the Radio Dot System on their commercial network to expand indoor 5G coverage and significantly improve 5G quality for subscribers.

Young-soo Seo, Senior Vice President, KT, says: “We have secured the foundation to provide KT's high-quality 5G service wherever our customers are through our technical cooperation with Ericsson. We will continue to develop innovative technologies that support first-class 5G coverage and services.”

In Europe, Swisscom was the first to make a data call over the 5G Radio Dot. The Swiss service provider also delivered indoor 5G connectivity to attendees at the recent World Economic Forum event in Davos using 5G Radio Dot.

Daniel Staub, Head of Mobile, Swisscom AG, says: ”The 5G Dot is an essential building block in our ongoing expansion of 5G commercial services across Switzerland. It allows us to deliver high-capacity and high-performing networks indoors to our customers.”
