5G open for business

We are now starting to see commercial 5G networks going live. Previous generations were focused on consumer and personal communications but now 5G will serve consumers, enterprises and take the internet of things to the next level, where superior connectivity is a prerequisite. Initially, 5G will be a capacity enhancer in metropolitan areas and enhanced mobile broadband and fixed wireless access will be ways for operators to address explosive traffic growth.

Ericsson in 5G – from blue print to reality

From 5G standardization to today’s commercialization, Ericsson has been a key player in making 5G networks a commercial reality.

  • Ericsson is driving 5G standardization and was the largest contributor to the standardization body in 3GPP during 2018. Ericsson is committed to rapidly applying these standards to our technology development.
  • We have achieved interoperability between Ericsson Radio System commercial radios and the 5G test devices of our ecosystem partners such as Qualcomm and Intel on all main spectrum bands for initial 5G launches – most of them as first in the industry.
  • We have a flexible portfolio with our 5G platform that enables telecom operators to smoothly switch on 5G on their existing 4G networks. The Ericsson Radio System hardware has been 5G-ready since 2015 and can also be used for 5G NR with a remote software installation. This means we have already shipped more than 3 million 5G-ready radios to our customers worldwide.
  • Ericsson is a technology leader in 5G. Pioneering customers select us as their 5G partner and we are first with commercial live networks in the United States, South Korea and Switzerland and have already deployed operational 5G networks based on commercial equipment in the Middle East, Australia, Asia and Europe. We have publicly announced commercial 5G deals with 18 named operator customers.
  •  In addition to this, we have over 40 operator memorandums of understanding worldwide and we are collaborating with more than 40 universities and technology institutes as well as 30 industry partners.

5G ultra-low latency propels jet engine manufacturing

Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology we trialed how 5G can improve manufacturing processes. Our 5G trial system achieved ultra-low latency of close to 1 millisecond, allowing for real time monitoring and control.

5G live in Korea

In February 2018 Ericsson and Korea Telecom together with Intel conducted a 5G trial in a dense urban environment in the center of Seoul.
