Johan van den Branden, CNO at Odido, and Fatih Noyan, Country Manager of Ericsson in the Netherlands, discuss the successful partnership aimed at building one of the best-performing mobile networks, providing a strong foundation for innovation. This collaboration has led to significant achievements, including the activation of 3.5 gigahertz frequencies to secure super high data speeds and maximum reliability, making Odido the Fastest Mobile Network operator in the Netherlands as named by Ookla in July 2024.

Sustainability is a key focus in the partnership, with ambitious targets for net-zero emissions by 2040 across the complete value chain. Ericsson supports Odido's sustainability goals with innovative digital power solutions and 5G technology, enabling new consumer and enterprise use cases. The partnership aims to leverage advanced network capabilities, driving new revenue streams, business models, and use cases, to ensure a technology leading and innovation-driven future for both companies.

Technology leading partners: Odido and Ericsson

In 2022, Ericsson embarked on the journey to modernize Odido's RAN network with the latest and greatest Ericsson technology. Since then, together with Ericsson, Odido has made advanced technologies the standard, elevating the Dutch telecom market to new heights. A key example is Ericsson's new antenna technology which optimizes connectivity by focusing on individual users rather than broad groups.

The differentiator is the 3.5 GHz frequency and Odido and Ericsson's joint ability to rollout this technology on such a large portion of the network – something no other telecom provider worldwide has yet achieved.

Beyond that, Ericsson and Odido have together transformed Odido’s Service Order Management and Billing systems to pave the way for innovative 5G offerings.

“Our ambition is to remain among the world's leaders in 5G as well. Ericsson has shown us with its plans and ambitions how we can make this possible together.”

A reference showcase of our collaboration: The Odido Tech Hub

On November 28th, 2024, the Odido Tech Hub was formally opened in a grand opening ceremony at the Odido Headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands. The Odido Tech Hub showcases real-world business cases developed using the operator’s 5G network, powered by key partners like Ericsson. It’s a space to inspire business customers, partners, and colleagues with practical examples of what’s achievable with this technology.

The Tech Hub emphasizes Odido and Ericsson’s shared commitment to delivering the best mobile network in the Netherlands. This commitment is reflected in two ways: firstly, through this joint investment in establishing the Tech Hub, and secondly, through the real-world examples showcased in Odido's Tech Hub. These stories highlight the vast potential of Ericsson's exceptional 5G network for both the consumer and business markets.

“The opening of the Tech Hub marks another milestone in our strong collaboration with Odido as we strive together to deliver a faster, smarter, and more sustainable 5G experience.”

An outlook of what’s next based on a cutting-edge 5G network

The 5G network will never be finished as Odido is continuing to invest in future network technologies and related capabilities. The network that is being built today is the backbone to be future-proofed for upcoming 5G use case innovation and business model creation, both on the consumer as well as on the enterprise side.

Cutting-edge 5G equals sustainable 5G: The introduction of the Ericsson Site Energy Orchestration is on the horizon to further reduce energy costs at network sites.

Ultimately, the network will transform into an innovation platform that will allow performance differentiation for dedicated service creation on many levels. The exposure of these network capabilities allowing higher speeds, ultra-low latency, increased accuracy in positioning, higher coverage and reliability will drive new revenue streams, new business models and new use cases.
