5G to accelerate Indonesia’s digital transformation
- Smartphone users with 5G-ready handsets in Indonesia are excited about 5G, most think 5G should be 10 times faster than 4G speed
- High interest in 5G consumer use cases at Telkomsel’s 5G launch demo showcase
- Ericsson’s global technology expertise to support Indonesia’s digital transformation
A new report by Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) ConsumerLab – which is representative of 1.3 billion smartphone users globally including 220 million 5G subscribers, highlights that Indonesian 5G-ready users expect the fifth-generation technology to be at least 10 times faster than 4G. With higher speeds, ultra-low latency, and ubiquitous coverage, 5G is a transformational force for businesses, and will be critical in supporting the government’s agenda towards digital transformation and Industry 4.0 applications in Indonesia.
The report – Five Ways to a Better 5G – identifies the impact that 5G is already having on smartphone users worldwide. Today, 5G-ready users in Indonesia, defined as users with 5G-capable mobile phones, are already spending more time on AR apps and enhanced media compared to those with 4G phones. By 2025, consumers in Indonesia are expected to spend 7.5 to 8 hours per week on cloud gaming and augmented reality apps. Ericsson’s findings specify that consumers in Indonesia are willing to pay 50 percent more for 5G plans bundled with digital services.
Today, 19 percent of surveyed consumers already own 5G-ready smartphones. Meanwhile, around 5 million smartphone users in Indonesia could take up 5G in the first two years of commercial networks being made available. For communications service providers, 5G offers a significant first-mover opportunity, in order to gain a competitive advantage in the local market.
5G showcase at Telkomsel 5G launch
As a long-standing partner to Telkomsel, Ericsson showcased several 5G use cases at the recent 5G launch event, demonstrating 5G benefits for both consumers and enterprises.
For consumers, immersive and enhanced video is one of the most exciting use cases 5G can bring. 5G’s high speed and low latency enables a 360 degrees 4K video streaming with wireless connectivity, allowing consumers to enjoy an unparalleled immersive broadcasting experience in real-time through VR goggles.
At the event, Ericsson provided interactive booths where the visitors experienced 360 VR live streaming from Batam city, using a wearable neckband 360 degrees camera from a startup which is part of the Ericsson Startup5G program. This was accomplished using an end-to-end 5G connectivity between Batam and Jakarta.
Furthermore, 5G will transform how enterprises operate, unlocking new possibilities for the future. Ericsson also showcased a "live" augmented reality visualization of the digital twin of an actual city. Immersive technologies such as mixed reality will enable city planners to make better decisions for sustainable urbanism in the future.
Hendri Mulya Syam, CEO of Telkomsel says: “Telkomsel has always been a leader in telecommunications technology in Indonesia. Over the last several years, we have invested significantly to build up our 5G know-how, talent development and a comprehensive set of plans in bringing 5G to Indonesia. Therefore, we are excited to be the first operator to launch 5G in Indonesia. Our next commitment is to make sure that 5G is available to everyone in Indonesia. Telkomsel will gradually expand its 5G coverage and develop digital solutions through 5G best quality service, high speed and low latency network which are better than 4G. We are looking forward to strengthening our collaboration with Ericsson and other stakeholders in 5G ecosystem to enable network, services, and solutions that are beneficial and accessible for everyone.”
Jerry Soper, Country Head of Ericsson Indonesia, says: “5G will redefine the way people interact, societies function and businesses perform, as well as spur massive economic expansion. Ericsson is a proven ICT leader, with nearly 140 5G commercial agreements and contracts, powering 86 live 5G networks worldwide, with a technology legacy of 57,000 global patents. With over 100 years of presence in Indonesia, we have established strong collaboration with the local government as well as with the leading telecommunication operators. We look forward to providing 5G experience for Indonesian consumers together with Telkomsel, and supporting the government’s agenda towards digital transformation and Industry 4.0 applications in Indonesia.”
Jerry added, “The full benefits of 5G can only be reaped with establishment of a solid ecosystem. Spectrum availability is key for a speedy deployment. Adequate spectrum availability will accelerate Indonesia’s digital transformation journey, lay the foundation for innovation, boost economic growth and unlock the full potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, positioning the country as a leading 5G nation.“
