Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration, making the 5G switch easy
With the introduction of 5G, end-to-end management and the orchestration layer are becoming crucial. The Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration solution takes complexity out of the equation through the power of #automation and #AI. That’s why it is an essential piece of today’s 5G platform launch from Ericsson.
For those of us in the telco industry, the speed at which our business is shifting is inescapable. With commercial 5G rolling out this year, both consumer expectations and data traffic are increasing, and the forecasts have never looked bigger: a 5 x increase in mobile data traffic in 2024, for example, according to Ericsson Mobility Report.
Operators need to deploy a new kind of infrastructure that can efficiently manage these factors—in a way that also future-proofs the network for technology that is yet to come.
What are we launching today?
Ericsson is evolving its 5G platform, and one of the evolved components is Dynamic Orchestration. The Dynamic Orchestration solution has now been boosted with five new capabilities, a central piece being the integration of CENX technology into our solution (Ericsson acquired CENX in September 2018).
This is Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration
Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration is a multi-vendor, multi-domain, model-driven and open solution that is both ETSI compliant and aligned with ONAP.
It is a modular solution. Having Ericsson Orchestrator as its central piece enables Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration to integrate also other modules, such as inventory, testing engine, domain manager, assurance, and analytics modules.

Why is this launch important?
5G promises new business opportunities, but it also introduces new technology that, when it blends with existing technology, increases the multitude of network types, service types, system stacks, and infrastructure layers. This complexity threatens speed, efficiency, and, ultimately, profitability.
Intelligent management of this complexity within the 5G platform is key, where automation and AI technologies are critical to secure a smooth 5G evolution.
One of the biggest opportunities in 5G is the ability to run multiple network slices on a single network. Because a slice will perform as a dedicated network, more slices mean increased complexity. This will be impossible to profitably manage without orchestration capabilities.
Examples of increased network complexity we need to manage include:
Cloud-native applications, in addition to existing physical and virtual network functions (use of microservices architecture for faster implementation of new functionalities) Examples of such cloud native applications are the components of the new 5G core.
Workload distribution, from the central location to edge sites and public cloud (with workload distribution driven by application requirements such as extremely low latency and extremely high bandwidth)
Network slice automation across all areas of the service lifecycle (service creation, configuration, testing, deployment, and closed-loop assurance) to comply with the SLAs of new 5G/IoT services in a controlled environment
More details about today’s launch
The evolution of the Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration solution introduces network slicing automation comprising creation, testing, and deployment of network slices for the fast introduction of 5G services.
The solution also implements AI-powered closed-loop automation for hybrid networks (including physical, virtual, and container-based network functions) in a multi-vendor environment to identify service impacts and adapt the network in realtime to deliver the best end-user experience.
Five new and enhanced modules announced
The illustration below shows each of the following five modules.
NFV Orchestration (updated with cloud-native support). We are adding the capability to orchestrate cloud native workloads on Kubernetes (K8s). This is augmenting our hybrid orchestration capability to seamlessly combine PNFs, VNFs and K8s based workloads into a single network service.
Service Orchestration (new). This is a new module built on cloud native principles providing Ericsson customers with the capability to create network services spanning across private, central and edge data centers.
CENX Service Assurance (acquired in September 2018). CENX Service Assurance is now natively integrated into Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration and gives visibility of the entire network in near realtime. It delivers assurance of services and network slices end to end across core, radio, and transport networks.
WAN Orchestration (new). This is a new module that automates the transport resources as part of a network slice. The module also includes pre-integration of Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration with Juniper nodes for quick time to market, reduced SI complexity, and enhanced TCO.
Ericsson Cloud Deployment Engine (updated with 5G testing cases). This module provides automated testing, onboarding, and continuous deployment of new services for both Ericsson and non-Ericsson applications.
TTM improvement of up to 70 percent
Our financial analysis, coupled with deployment experience in field, says that with service orchestration we can realize dramatic TTM improvements — up to 70 percent, when combined with automated testing and onboarding. How are we different?
With a solution that is as comprehensive as Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration, there is a range of exciting things to talk about. Here are four selected capabilities that I believe you will find game-changing:
Pre-integrated and modular solution: A pre-integrated solution from us is the fast route to your desired business outcome. Our modular solution means that you can start from where you are in your existing architecture, making it easy to switch on 5G.
A single orchestrator for radio, transport, and core — managing physical, virtual, and cloud-native network functions: Service orchestration drives significant TTM improvements, in particular when it is combined with automated testing and onboarding.
Visualization of every service across every layer (infrastructure, virtual machines, virtual network functions, and services) and closed-loop assurance: The assurance module feeds instructions to the orchestration module to proceed with the automated healing, scaling, and migration of network resources.
Multi-vendor cloud deployment engine: This allows automated onboarding and continuous deployment of Ericsson and non-Ericsson VNFs. The solution is available in two deployment models: as a product and “as a Service.”

Who do we work with on the journey towards the next level of service automation?
Ericsson has an established base of more than 50 customers globally that signed contracts to deploy our orchestration solution, and a large portion of these are running our solution live today.
Two of the forward-looking service providers we’ve worked with are Verizon and Swisscom, who have implemented solutions that have supported a variety of use cases, as well as virtual and physical network provisioning.
