Data Commons – a trust framework

The walk down the memory lane continues. Back in 2013 we did a project about subscriber data that is still more than relevant, which we have not published anything about yet. And the current discussions around privacy related to Augmented and Mixed Reality have brought the topic back on top of our minds.

The Data Commons project was carried out by a team of mixed competencies with, apart from us, data researchers and [ Read more ]

A Future Network Developer Kit

Now that 5G is just around the corner we’re excited to finally share this one! It is something we did a few years ago together with our good friends at the Oslo based design studio Voy as part of our ever ongoing strategic design exploration of future network technology. The aim for this project was to create a tangible artefact that could communicate future [ Read more ]

Building the Public City: the Fak’ugesi chapter

Building the Public City is a project run by the City of Johannesburg that tries to solve public space challenges like disconnected communities, insecurity, and lack of civic participation. The project will propose ways to better integrate design and participation processes in Johannesburg. One of the prioritised areas is Braamfontein, a vibrant part of the central city. The area has poor public spaces in terms of both [ Read more ]

Micro-mobility for urban futures

This summer we, two students from Umeå Institute of Design, started a project for the strategic design group at Ericsson research. The assignment was to to develop a concept for distributed micro-logistics of small and medium sized deliveries. The focus was on community driven, sustainable means of transportation. Together with a small team of engineering students from KTH (Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan) [ Read more ]

Co-creating the city — City-scale mixed reality tested in Johannesburg

We just returned from Johannesburg, South Africa, where we tested an early prototype of a mixed reality platform that we are working on. The experiment in Johannesburg was part of a collaboration with UN-Habitat, Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) and Wits University where we are jointly exploring digital innovation in community-driven urban design.

UN Habitat, who we have been [ Read more ]

Fak’ugesi festival workshop coming up!

On September 8-9 we’ll be co-hosting a workshop on community led city planning with the help of ICT as part of the African Digital Innovation Festival, Fak’ugesi.

From the festival website:

Pic with collage of books

Summer vacations are over here in Sweden and what could be better than kicking off the autumn with a new approach to the blog?! We’ll keep posting about our research but we’ll also be updating you with less “polished” posts, such as this one.

Acquiring insights and turn them into knowledge is a fundamental part of any design and/or research activity. In today’s information saturated world [ Read more ]

Inclusiveness through Mixed Reality

We would like to welcome guest writers to our blog. During the spring, we have had a group of four Industrial Design Engineering students from Chalmers University of Technology doing a project for us as a part of their master program. We asked them to conceptualise applications of mixed reality including haptics for use in urban settings on a city-scale. And of course, they did [ Read more ]

Mixed reality and dialogues about future urban plans and developments

During the last years, we have together with both internal and external partners explored various aspects of ICT and sustainable urbanism. The ambition with the activities described here are also to continue to develop concepts and strategies within this broader theme, and to concretize what kind of values that new technologies might bring. It is still very much research-in-progress, so [ Read more ]

Mixed Reality Mining – ICTs in a mining context

During last spring we at Strategic Design and the Service System Research team engaged in a joint research project with Boliden. Together we explored what the mining industry could do with 5G and ICTs in a near future. Our goal was to develop tangible concepts showcasing how Ericsson’s current or possible future technologies could create benefits for the mining industry; in terms of safety, productivity, employee well-being, or any other relevant aspect. We strived [ Read more ]
