Telecom operators in pole position as enterprises embrace IoT

With 20 billion IoT devices predicted by 2023, IoT has truly become a powerful catalyst for industry transformation. While we have witnessed impressive market developments in recent years, IoT remains as complex as ever. In a recent webinar, we sifted through some of the complexity facing telecom service providers in a bid to help them identify their roles in IoT.

Enterprise IoT spend is projected to be massive – estimated to be in the vicinity of USD 300 billion by 2020. As a result, technology firms are jockeying to become IoT service providers of choice for businesses. Yet, many analysts believe telecom operators are in a pole position to help enterprises with their IoT journeys. This is natural, after all, since telecom operators are in the business of providing connectivity, the foundational building block of IoT, on which other value is built.

As businesses and governments embrace IoT and begin to transform, they require a trusted partner with connectivity expertise. To capitalize on that need, telecom service providers must reinvent processes, create new services and position themselves optimally on the IoT value chain. The time to innovate is now.

How enterprises are striving for global digitalization

Recently, I hosted a webinar with two Ericsson experts: Jan Abrahamsson, Head of IoT Strategy and Strategic Customer Engagements, and Jeff Travers, Head of IoT Connectivity Management.

During our discussion, we gave an overview of the ICT landscape and highlighted how enterprises – often big corporations and multinationals – are digitalizing their business; many want to connect their products and make them available globally.

In addition, their C-level executives are investigating how they can renovate customer interactions, differentiate their services, and optimize data use. While this trend is top of the agenda in many boardrooms, the IoT world is a complex environment so it’s not immediately clear who these enterprises should turn to for advice.

We also talked about some of the challenges facing telecom operators. For them, IoT is a critical opportunity to meet new customer needs and yet progress varies a lot from country to country. Operator strategies in developing markets, for example, are only emerging compared to their peers in more mature market.

IoT Accelerator speeds telecom operators’ path to revenue

During the webinar, we looked at the Ericsson IoT Accelerator, a horizontal platform that sits at the heart of our IoT portfolio and the hub of ecosystem collaboration. We summarized how the IoT Accelerator can help telecom service providers quickly realize new revenue. We also looked at how our ecosystem partners are bolstering their positions in the value chain using the platform. Finally, we presented our telecom service provider-focused IoT strategy and highlighted some of the latest projects we have with telecom operators which are already capturing IoT revenue like this innovative “scarecrow” project from Japan.

There are various roles telecom service providers can take to help industries transform, each role requiring different collaborative ecosystems – from device manufacturers and app developers to a wide range of industry partners.
