Ericsson NFVI

Ericsson NFVi solution enables operators to deploy virtual telecom, OSS, BSS, IT and media workloads with speed while keeping total cost of ownership low. By providing a pre-integrated, tested and verified solution following ETSI architectural principles, operators will have solid foundation to catch new revenue opportunities both within the consumer and enterprise domains.

Solution overview

We pre-integrated the latest cloud and open source technologies, including software-defined infrastructure, support for network slicing, and automated orchestration, into a standards-based telco-grade platform ready for 5G. The focus is on rolling out operators' virtual network functions and services in dramatically shorter time because we have pre-integrated, tested and verified the solution. This approach reduces complexity and risk during the NFV transformation. Our telecom grade solution is commercially proven with several of the world’s leading operators.

Solution building blocks

Ericsson NFVi solution consists of software and hardware products as well support and system integration services forming a complete solution for telecom operators.

Automated orchestration and management
Set up, launch, and lifecycle-manage your virtual network functions and services easily with Ericsson Orchestrator, and automate their deployment across underlying virtual environments and physical resources.

Telecom grade VIM
Dynamically allocate resources for VNFs with telecom grade capabilities such as redundancy, high availability, high throughput with low latency, trusted tenant isolation, automatic VM recovery, and more with Ericsson Cloud Execution Environment - our telecom grade VIM based on OpenStack.

Software-defined networking
Ericsson Cloud SDN is a network virtualization solution providing seamless intra- and inter-datacenter connectivity. It uniquely combines an industrialized OpenDaylight controller with advanced routing capabilities and provides network automation services to NFV workloads.

Software-defined infrastructure
Create multiple virtual performance optimized datacenters (vPODs) from a single infrastructure, each optimized to run a particular type of workload. Assign or remove pooled compute and storage resources flexibly. Select either our NEBS3-complaint Ericsson BSP 8100 or Ericsson HDS 8000 based on Intel® Rack Scale Design.

Our open source collaboration

The use of open source is foundational in the Ericsson NFVi solution. Below are a few examples on open source communities and projects we are invloved in.

ONAP (Open Network Automation Platform) brings together Open ECOMP and Open-O projects to deliver a unified architecture and implementation of real-time, policy-driven orchestration and automation of physical and virtual network functions.

OPNFV (Open Platform for NFV) creates a reference NFV platform to accelerate the transformation of service providers through system integration, deployment and testing. Ericsson is a platinum member of OPNFV.

OpenStack is a cloud operating system that controls large pools of compute, storage and networking resources throught a datacenter, all managed through a dashboard that gives administrators control while empowering their users to provision resources through a web interface. Ericsson is a platinum member in OpenStack.

OpenDaylight is an open source SDN (Software Defined Networking) project hosted by the Linux Foundation. The OpenDaylight community builds a common SDN platform to deliver interoperable, programmable networks to enterprises and service providers. Ericsson is a platinum member of OpenDaylight.

Open vSwitch is an open source virtual switch designed to enable network automation while supporting standard management interfaces and protocol. It's hosted by the Linux Foundation since August 2016 and it's the most widely used networking back-end in OpenStack.

Open Compute Project (OCP) is a global community of technology leaders working to break open the proprietary IT infrastructure and design the most efficient server, storage and data center hardware to maximize innovation and reduce operational complexity in scalable computing. Ericsson is a platinum member of OCP.

Open Datacenter Commitee (ODCC) purpose is to design China's data center open platform and to promote the development of the Internet industry and infrastructure standardization and industrialization process. Ericsson is a member of ODCC.
